Inhabiting the library: designing new spaces for a service in flux

Despite the ever-increasing gap between citizens and cultural life, libraries are still very popular not just for their cultural programmes, but first and foremost as spaces in their own right. Paradoxically, libraries lay claim to a dual status as long-standing loci of knowledge and their familiar alter ego, adapted to their specific local setting.
