“We need to talk about problem novels.” A new way of classifying novels for a young adult readership

Why not classify young adult novels by theme rather than in alphabetical order? The article takes the example of three libraries that have taken up this new classification, which seems to meet the needs of young adult readers. The author demonstrates the advantages of the system, which provides easier and more direct access to books, an increase in borrowing, and so on, particularly if the books are classified both by author and by theme. The new classification takes time to set up and requires adaptability on the part of librarians, who need to be able to keep pace with the system as it evolves. However, there are many ways to take the new system further and make the offer of problem novels more inventive and enticing for young adult readers.
