Documentary activity: perception and meaning

Documentary activity is based on theoretical concepts and foundations which have created in their time (more than a century) social and occupational perceptions of the professions concerned with the handling of documents. According to the author, the dominant perception is a traditional vision based on the universality of knowledge, the primacy of the physical document, the impartiality of content, and the performance of the technical system with all its visible consequences for professionals and for uses. He compares this with a "new" vision based on the "meaning" attributed by man to everything, on the different perception and varied expression of things among human beings, on the necessary sharing of knowledge through subjective interaction, and finally on the complexity of documentary tasks and of their resolution thanks to the fact that all documentary action is contextualised action, fitting in well with the global system that is built for, and made use of by, everyone searching for information.
