Children's Libraries in Sweden

Children are given priority in Sweden's public libraries and books and reading have always been at the hub of children's libraries. The goal is to reach out to every child and since the beginning of the seventies children's librarians have developed a whole battery of methods to fulfill this ambition. During the nineties all local government financed activities have been seriously hit by economic cut-backs. To counteract the effects of these in children's libraries and school libraries, and to stimulate reading and the purchase of books for children, a new system for state subsidies was decided upon in 1997. During the nineties the introduction of computers has visibly renewed services and activities in children's libraries in different ways.
