Bibliotheca Alexandrina: in Mid-Course
What has become of the project for a new Alexandrian library, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, started in 1987 with the initiative of the Egyptian authorities and placed, since 1989, under the aegis of Unesco? This project, which has long lived with uncertainty and known the hazards of its international status, is today leaving the ground. Now that the construction of the building is on the point of completion, all energies are turning towards the contents of this unique library which, in its status and its ambitions, will be unlike any other. The question of its collections, evidently central, is developed more specifically in this article.
