German university libraries

This paper presents the recent developments in the German university libraries. Five years after the German reunification, universities in the five new states of the East have largely been remodelled according to standards prescribed by the West. Faced with budgetary restraints and increasing users'demands, university libraries respond to the situation by forging ahead with shared cataloguing schemes and the introduction of new information and documentation services. With regional cooperation no longer just a theoretical concept, they also tackle the problem of preservation in a cooperative spirit.
