Vroom, Driiing, bang and splash… Onomatopoeia in comic strips: text or image?

The semiotic system found in comics is intrinsically subversive. It is inventive in foregrounding the image and in bringing sounds into a space of silence, translating them into drawn form. The speech bubble is a space of sound provided with a typographical staging. Even wordless comics, which are becoming increasingly common, have ways of creating sound through drawing to stage tension and drama. The move into the digital realm is bringing its own set of challenges.
