How does the professional identity of librarians reflect their use of technology, and what developments and interactions can be analysed in this arena? The article looks at the historical and political basis for such a dialogue before studying the radical shift brought about by the internet and the web 2.0. The author argues that current developments need to be fully taken into account and calls on librarians to study their own practices, becoming tacticians rather than strategists and thereby becoming better placed to take advantage of circumstances and successfully managing what is a highly complex situation.
