W(h)ither libraries? a view from the next generation of librarians

Libraries are under increasing threat as information becomes accessible whenever and wherever people need it. Their supporters might argue the contrary, but it is hard to deny that their usefulness and purpose are facing serious challenges. Libraries have never achieved full recognition of their role as social mediators, and the advent of the digital age now threatens to undermine their principal remit as sources of information. Given that librarians can no longer be certain of their future, who is left to defend libraries against losing their purpose and seeing their budgets slashed?
