A new dawn for Chinese library science

By 2010, China had 457 million web surfers and 60 billion internet pages in Chinese. The country’s libraries face the same issues as elsewhere when it comes to the challenges of digital content. The Chinese government has been building and modernising libraries of all kinds and at all levels since 2005, as they believe that libraries have a fundamental role to play in providing access to culture for all sectors of society, including the most marginal. Digital libraries and training a new generation of librarians are major issues for the country, as is the development of online services, particularly using mobile phone technology.
