Electronic books and the expertise of the visually impaired
The new forms of the written word to have emerged in the digital age represent a historic opportunity for those with visual impairments and other barriers to reading. In the past, the visually impaired had to obtain specially adapted material which was not available from traditional circuits. Current practice tends to include the reading habits of this specific readership in mainstream book circuits. The intimate reading experience that special digital interfaces can offer readers with difficulties has produced a form of expertise in e-books that can be of benefit to the population at large.
