Developing libraries and public literacy in Colombia: An ambitious joint policy

In recent years, Colombia has begun to implement an ambitious policy promoting libraries and reading. The policy is based on a national project of public and private partnerships, and involves opening major libraries, strengthening regional libraries, improving training for librarians, and creating library networks. The stated aim of the initiative is to turn Colombia into a nation of readers as a means of furthering the country’s social and cultural development. Books are thus seen as a means of loosening the grip of violence and exclusion.
