Harvesting the World Wide Web: Internet and legal deposit
Following several years of trying and testing various approaches, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France has now established a legal framework for the legal deposit of websites. The vast increase in exclusively digital collections means that websites are now harvested automatically or semi-automatically. Do developments such as the use of targeted collection strategies in addition to automatic web crawlers as a means of enhancing the selection of sites reflect profound changes to come in librarianship as a whole? How much freedom will librarians have to intervene in the process, and what added value will they be able to bring?
