Outsourcing and privatisation: a brief recent history of practices in some North American libraries

This article presents an overview of increasing outsourcing by North American libraries, from that of peripheral tasks – and the success of new services offered by external providers – as well as core library missions, to full privatisation. It looks at the implementation and evolution of this trend in the course of the last ten years, some significant experiences, and resistance encountered.
