Professional associations and European cooperation

This article presents the role of international professional associations on the European and global scales, and proposes a programme of development of international cooperation, insisting on the importance of heightening awareness of the role of libraries. It draws on the example of the Netherlands to illustrate the actions that might be undertaken by professional associations to encourage international aspects in the daily life of libraries and the promotion of quality policy and practices, as well as international professional exchanges.
