Are librarians mediators?
Like many other professionals, librarians increasingly see themselves as mediators. This is an ambiguous and complex notion, as mediation covers a wide range of concepts, including hedonism (reading as a source of pleasure), mediating the validation of books, cultural activities, and the instrumentalist approach which unites all the traditional activities of a librarian. The author interprets mediation as a means of encouraging the desire to read, but prefers to consider the concept of accompanying readers on their journey.
