Reference services in a competitive environment
This article is based on the observation of the evolution of reference services in US libraries from their origins to the current crisis. It identifies the models to follow to develop such services in France and underlines the role of major search engines (indirect competition through self-documentation) and their online reference services (direct competition) in the difficulties currently faced by libraries in terms of providing information. It advises libraries to ensure their web presence and to promote networking.
