The profession, training and status of library personnel: evolution, adaptation and mutation

The organization of the profession of librarians and information scientists in France is difficult to decipher. This article gives an update on the organization and the recent and forthcoming evolution in the area of training (European harmonization, autonomy of universities); and the management of recruitment and careers of library professionals (notably in relation to the modifications of the statutes, mobility, promotion and advancement, grading an evaluation). It also underlines the specifications of the French public sector (regional and State) and questions the feasibility of maintaining the present type of operation for public libraries.
