The remote services: the network of the libraries of the INRIA

As a national institution currently active on 19 different sites, the INRIA was very soon taken with the idea of operating as a network. As an institution of research into information technology, heavily involved in the development of the Internet and the web, it has favoured an early appropriation of communication technologies by all its component sections together. The INRIA's information officers have been well aware in this context of the opportunity to develop a truly professional network, based on the use of collaborative tools and the sharing of resources and abilities, the objective being to optimise the range of documentary resources of the five documentation centres and to make the collections accessible to all the research teams, regardless of their location.
