Reading contracts: an experience with electronic book readers in a library

The electronic book raised many hopes and questions when it appeared on the American market in 1998. In autumn 2001, an experimental system was initiated in five municipal libraries in the Rhône-Alpes region, aiming to carry out a field study about what had happened to "reading contracts" with this new support. The article gives the results of this investigation, focusing on how the electronic books were received by readers and how loans were organised by librarians.
