Public libraries in France as seen from beyond the Rhine
There are undoubtedly differences in the organisation of work in public libraries in France and Germany. However, it can be said that the general picture of French libraries as far as German librarians are concerned is dominated by two sentiments: approval (and even admiration for what has been achieved in the last twenty years) and envy (Germany has nothing comparable to the participation of the State in the development of public reading in France).
