The multimedia library and music: a study in applied sociology

An enquiry by questionnaire was carried out in the autumn of 2001 among the public clientele of a music lending library in Grenoble. Study of the relationships between variables produces a profile of a "widespread community" which is marked by social "distinction", but at the centre of which musical know-how (maintained by collective instrumental practice) seems a better discriminator than social determinants. Thus one ends up with a typological classification of users. "Tourists", "Serious users" and "Musicians" differ according to their regularity of use and involvement.
