Public libraries in Spain

The changes that have been experienced by political and administrative systems in Spain during the last twenty years have had significant repercussions on the development of public libraries in the country. This article presents first of all the current state of legislation in this domain and the respective competencies of the various administrations concerned (the State, autonomous communities, municipalities). It then analyses the statistical data that illustrate this development. Finally, various examples of management of the public library network and the contributions of certain organisations to the development of these libraries are described.
