A knowledge society: the paradox of the evolution of the specific tasks of university libraries
This article lays down a model of new development for university libraries confronted with the possibility of the disappearance of several of their specific tasks. What is at stake is the withdrawal of their role as collectors of information and of conservation of scholarly journals and books. The alternative is the setting up of effective networks and customised services which could be the equivalent of the technological infrastructure of workplaces, so as to transform information into knowledge.
