Local communities and universities
With the final contracts for plan État-Régions and the programmes Universities 2000 and University of the Third Millennium, the involvement of the local communities in university development has had a real boost, well beyond assistance with buildings and local developments. Whereas regions offer assistance for research, encourage entry to the Internet, and question themselves about their role in connection with higher professional training, towns include the university sites in their urban policy and support student life. Important financial packages are agreed to support university activity and to integrate students into the town. But even if universities have now become an integral part of the concerns of the local communities, it is noticeable that they do not show any interest in the projects of the communities.
