Twenty Years of Continuing Professional Education of Librarians in the Communauté française de Belgique

To introduce this assessment of the continuing education of librarians in the Communauté française de Belgique over the course of the last twenty years, it has been judged necessary to present the historical context, putting the accent on the legislative aspect, its successive evolutionary steps and its consequences in the matter of training. This development has as its goal the facilitation of understanding of the problem by a public unaccustomed to the complexity of the institutions of a contemporary, federal Belgium. The body of the text includes tables synthesizing statistics concerning participation in continuing education, the evolution of a number of programmed modules and the quantification of training days figuring in the calender, year by year, for the period 1994-1998. An appendix gathers the notes, which constitute a selected bibliography and the details of training colleges.
