State Librarians Five Years After Their Creation : The Birth of a Corps

The creation of a new corps of state librarians in 1992 was followed by transitory measures aimed at establishing the first batallions with this new status. At the end of these measures, the librarians appear as officers whose responsibilities, well defined despite their varied activities, are as clearly perceived by themselves as by the directors of the establishment. However, recognition of their status remains confused when compared with that of other officers, especially conservationists with whom they share a number of functions. Depending on whether the creation of appointments is important or modest, « monosite » or multi-polar, the responsibilities for training, management of services or for various transversal functions often varies according to the person's activities before his or her accession to the grade of librarian.
