Uses of the Internet at the Bibliothèque publique d'information, or When the liner puts to surf

Since June 1995, the Bibliothèque publique d'information has put nine Internet consultation posts at the disposition of the public, at no charge. In order to better define its users and their practices a questionnaire has been circulated to around 150 people over a four month period. The results of this sociological inquiry are analysed here in an attempt to identify who consults the network, what they consult, what their behaviour is, and from this information to draw conclusions about the planning of libraries and reading practices.
