Social Science Collections and the Electronic Library

The place for collections of electronic documents relevant to the Humanities has been the subject of some debate in American Universities for several years. Beyond those who oppose the supporters of the bookish culture to the eulogists to the virtual library, it is the role of libraries which is under discussion. Must they absorb electronic centres of documentation (e-text centers) ? Must these latter stay as separate entities in the model of bookish collections or are they to take up some other method of access ?
