From the library to the establishment in the town : young users'routes in the sensitive areas

This article is the report of a research founded on interviews with young people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds, the life development of whom has been inflected by the frequenting of a library. If these public libraries contribute to a struggle against the processes of exclusion and relegation they are subjected to, it is not because they would give rise to new forms of social work. It is because the users are able to increase a cultural and school « asset ». And it is perhaps above all because they can elaborate a particular identity and a critical distance, which make them able to come out of the assigned places and to lose their fondness for stigmatizing images.
