The question is whether or not the professional practice and the public image of the librarian's job are affected by current social development. Management staff of the municipal libraries in Essonne filled in an opinion poll. Their answers supplied the image of a socially homogeneous group, whose main preoccupations were budget problems, their new status as conferred by local civil service, new computer technology, and public libraries'missions.
