Rennes : documentation and automation

The automation of documentation services in Rennes has been based, from the beginning of the programme in 1989, on the intention of creating a local network supplied with a common catalogue file and a union catalogue. To reach this goal, two actions have been launched simultaneously : automation of services and retrospective conversion of the catalogues. In that double action, the library has been helped by a consulting agency and by services companies. The study plan of the retrospective conversion relied on the sharing of tasks. Such a process was not free from ups and downs. At the end of the initial setting-up of the catalogue file, an evaluation is necessary to estimate the results for the staff and for the users.
