A library knows rather easily the requests of its users. But what do think about it non registered people ? Can the fact to offer new activities, related to the more recent communication technics, enlarge the public ? An inquiry realized among two hundred inhabitants of Saint-Etienne establishes that 70 % of the non-users have no aversion for reading. The creation of a new library offering various activities is very well perceived. Wishes are centered on three levels : a loaning service centered on providing mainly text and image, but also developing ways to facilitate reading at home, in some special cases ; in the very library, placing at disposal sophisticated equipments - that people cannot have at home - caring for the formation in new technologies ; finally, the whish that the new library becomes a truly convivial cultural space.
