The Lands of ISBN : the national practices and uses

The standard book number was bom in 1965 in Great Britain in a purpose of stock management in bookshops. Internationally adopted since 1969, it is first a tool for a standardization of book numbering. The international agency in Berlin is the coordinator, while each national agency allocates bookshops with numbers. Legal obligations relating to ISBN differ from one country to the next, so does the sharing out of national bibliographic databases management. Today the ISBN is mainly used by booksellers in online orders. More and more combined with the bar code, it is also a tool for electronic bookstock management ; therefore it might be of interest to books-. hops, libraries or documentation centers.
