America, America : American librarians in a changing world

The automation of the main services in a library (cataloguing, acquisitions and public service) allows the concentration of the technical occupations on a small number of non professionals. With the exemple of the Texas university library in Austin, the author studies the discontent of the librarians : on one hand they are deprived of their main attributions and cannot always follow the new wave in the profession, and on the other hand they are more and more dependent on informaticians and managers. Instead of a difficult redeployment toward industry, the solution for the future lies in a stronger integration of the librarians into the university world. More qualified and specialised, they will be able to adapt.
