Automation in Valence

The network of the municipal library in Valence was automated in 1981. The procedure applied first to the circulation module in the main library and in two branches ; the system worked off-line until 1985. Now the library has a stand alone management system that works online and includes all the modules in all the buildings. The retrospective conversion of existing bibliographic records and the shared cataloguing in a network environment raised many problems which have not been totally solved. Automation induces new attitudes towards the service for the users and towards cooperation.
