Introduction to LAMECH (Liste d'autorité de matières encyclopédique, collective et hiérarchisée = Encyclopaedic collective and hierarchical subject authority list)

LAMECH originates in the work done in France by the BPI and the Bibliothèque nationale after the French translation of LCSH by the University of Laval in Québec. Established to fit the development of union catalogs, LAMECH is primarily, with its 70,000 preferred terms, a reference tool for indexation. Main access to the list should be through an online databank hosted by the SUNIST, as well as its managements by the National cell for coordination and subject indexing.
