The future for central lending libraries at the département level: the point of view of the Association des directeurs de bibliothèques départementales de prêt

Central lending libraries vary widely according to the nature of the département. These variations are largely a consequence of the policy of decentralisation, in addition to the intrinsic differences between départements. At a time when inter-municipal co-operation is becoming increasingly important and internet is becoming a vital library service, central lending libraries still have a key role to play in promoting reading at a local level. However, there is considerable scope for change in the way they fulfil this role.
