Encouraging autonomy for the intellectually disabled: the Pictomédia project

Pictomédia is a pictogram-based communication system designed to encourage people with intellectual disabilities to develop autonomy in their personal, social, and professional lives. It is based on a database of over two thousand pictograms and Pictomédia Scribe software for editing pictographic documents. Other software programmes are currently being designed or used in improving ease of movement and digital access and for teaching reading, writing, and French as a foreign language. These should be taken up by libraries, which can play a key role in developing autonomy for the intellectually disabled.
