Libraries and intellectually disabled readers

The Gonfreville-l'Orcher multimedia library's project to improve access to culture for all sectors of the community makes it a vital resource for people with intellectual disabilities, their families and support structures. The project -a key priority for all departments within the library- is based on services including a specialist reception, collection, and cultural programme. However, the library also encourages special needs readers to use the full range of services available to all readers. Going forward, the project will require regular evaluation, including training for library staff to ensure skills are passed on, strengthening partnerships, and inclusion in a larger-scale project at the level of the city or wider urban area.
