Evaluating higher education library staff: hopes and fears

Staff evaluations in higher education libraries in France are based on rules drawn up in 2002 for evaluating, assessing, and promoting state employees, which updated earlier, obsolete staff assessment rules. This article presents the various aspects of this reform, including the modernisation of the assessment process and the basis for the evaluation procedure, and puts forward a number of proposals for improving the process based on the author’s observation of points of conflict.
