A little précis for encoding characters
This article deals with the electronic management of character sets, essentially for professional staff in libraries and information services. After looking back at the concept of writing (definition, types and characteristics), it describes the characters, the history and the principles of their encoding, as well as the standards for character sets (including Unicode), and insists upon the importance of typography in understanding a text.
