Arguments in favour of an analysis of the future of research libraries

French universities are characterised by the dispersal of information resources across their campuses. With the exception of the French National Library, researchers lament the absence of a large reference library in the humanities and the social sciences. At a time of Internet development, there is a risk that they will abandon university libraries even more. And yet, several arguments demonstrate the need of the latter for scientific research. Opportunities for cooperation between librarians and researchers could be opened up in three directions.
