One hundred years of public libraries in China
The article describes the public library system in China by drawing on professional Chinese literature and on first hand experience in Nankin. After recalling the context within which public libraries were created, the author describes the different kinds of public libraries, their present state underlining the effects of the structure of this type of system on contemporary professional practices. She describes the development of new trends, dwells on the revolution in services before concluding with the interest accorded to public libraries by the profession in China.
