French language multimedia library of Limoges: heritage and creation

The construction of the Bibliothèque francophone multimédia (Bfm), which opened to the public in September 1998, has been the occasion for a fundamental reflection on the part of the city of Limoges about integration with the cultural plans of Bfm, which is as much to do with the historic heritage of the construction site of this new facility, as with the contemporary creation from the 1% of the budget allotted to a work of art. Or how to link up harmoniously, in a modern structure, buildings of the 17th to the 19th centuries, a Gallo-Roman mosaic, and an Aubusson tapestry of the end of the 20th century, and especially to make sure that this heritage should not only be “decorative”, but should, on the contrary, be fully accepted by users as an integral part both of the history of the city, and of the cultural plans of the library.
