New Technology and its Users: An Inquiry into the Usage of French Libraries

This article presents the first results of a study into the use of new technology in libraries accessible to a large part of the general public in France, realized as part of an inquiry, carried out in 1998-1999 at sites within three regions: the Île-de-France, the Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur. Herein, we have distinguished between the two «profiles» which contrast the most in their familiarity with the use of CD-ROMs and the Internet: those people interviewed among the users of the Bibliothèque nationale de France and those of Miramas library (Bouches-du-Rhône).
