Educating Users of the Bibliothèque nationale de France

This article gives an account of some activities carried out by the Bibliothèque nationale de France in the area of the education of readers using the upper-garden level, that is to say on the general public level of the François Mitterrand site at Tolbiac. Rather than draw conclusions from relatively limited experience (December 1996 to September 1998), the author sketches out a certain number of questions. In effect, after a start-up period, during which a certain pragmatism has reigned, given that the library had a new readership to attract, the necessity of institutional reflection imposes itself, in order that the numerous training activities, which include those concerning readers in the lower-garden level, are entered in a context that is clear and results in a comprehensible service.
