An Instrument of Intellectual Affiliation: Teaching Documentation Methodology in the Under-Graduate Years of University

The author attempts to evaluate the impact of the teaching of documentation methodology, introduced in 1984 by the university of Paris 8 for under-graduate students, has had on the pedagogical results of students. It shows the effectiveness of such teaching on the «career» of students, and concludes that it contributes to the «affiliation» of first year students. In his opinion, the teaching of documentation methodology allows the subject to achieve, in a competent fashion, the three fundamental operations of an intellectual apprenticeship, which are to think, to classify and to categorize.
