On Swedish public library development: from a glorious past to an unpredictable future

Swedish public libraries are the fruit of a strong ideological tradition. A rapid development took place from the 50s to the mid 80s. This positive trend was broken in the late 80s. In the last ten years public libraries have suffered from financial restrictions and consequent cuts in services. Today librarians have regained confidence for the future. The government has showed a strong interest in libraries and new technology gives a base for the development and improvement of services.
