Heritage and New Technology: Musical Manuscripts of the Middle Ages at the Bibliothèque interuniversitaire de Montpellier

The Bibliothèque interuniversitaire de médecine de Montpellier has decided to create a cd-rom of the medieval manuscripts in its heritage collections to complement and stimulate study of them by scholars, and to show to a much larger public documents that are normally inaccessible, and so contribute to their conservation. To the very important manuscripts for the history of music and some 27 other fragments of music, have been added numerous illuminations of musical instruments. Library, manuscripts, history of musical writing, and instruments form the four parts which will be joined in a database on the Internet. A quality tool for researchers, an attractive document for the public, a new life for an invaluable heritage: such are the goals of this work which must be followed by similar operations.
